Barberino Val d’Elsa: a medieval gem hidden in the heart of Chianti

    Barberino Val ‘Delsa

Barberino Val d’Elsa is a charming Tuscan village located between Florence and Siena, nestled among the Chianti hills. Despite its beauty and rich historical heritage, it remains largely undiscovered by mass tourism, offering a truly authentic and peaceful experience.

There’s a little village in the heart of Tuscany that few know about—but those who do, fall in love forever. Barberino Val d’Elsa is a hidden gem, where time seems to stand still. From its panoramic terraces, your gaze stretches across a picture-perfect landscape: vineyards, olive trees, distant towers, and infinite skies.

Just 20 minutes from Villa Le Torri, it’s a place that always manages to surprise and captivate. For my guests, it’s always an unexpected discovery, one that stays with them.

    Discovering the village

The historic center preserves its medieval layout, with an elongated shape and a main street, Via Francesco da Barberino, connecting two ancient gates: Porta Senese and Porta Fiorentina. The medieval walls and defensive towers tell the story of its strategic past.

A journey through time: a bit of history

Barberino Val d’Elsa was born in the Middle Ages, following the destruction of the city of Semifonte by Florence in 1202. Built as a fortified village, it became an important stop along the Via Francigena, a major pilgrimage and trade route between Rome and Northern Europe.

Protected by walls and two gatesPorta Senese (14th century) and Porta Fiorentina (later rebuilt)—it was a shelter for pilgrims and merchants. Over the centuries, it grew rich in churches, noble residences, and hospitals, while maintaining its original medieval character. It is also the birthplace of the poet Francesco da Barberino.
