Badia a Passignano: a Hidden Gem of Vines, Art and Spirituality

    on

An ancient abbey, rolling hills, and the soul of Tuscany in one unforgettable place

Just a 22-minute drive from Villa Le Torri, nestled in the heart of authentic Chianti, lies a place that feels like a dream: Badia a Passignano.

Surrounded by vineyards, centuries-old olive groves, and peaceful woods, this tiny Tuscan hamlet enchants visitors with its timeless charm. It’s the perfect destination for lovers of history, nature, and fine wine—but also for those seeking silence, beauty, and spiritual serenity.

    Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo

At the heart of the village stands the magnificent Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, founded in 1049 by Saint Giovanni Gualberto. Over the centuries, this Vallombrosan monastery took on the appearance of a fortress, with crenellated walls and corner towers that overlook the soft hills of Chianti. A fascinating detail? Galileo Galilei once taught mathematics and physics here in the 16th century.

Every corner of the abbey tells a story:

    • The Church of San Michele Arcangelo (12th century), with its Latin cross plan, holds frescoes by Ghirlandaio and Allori.

    • The Cloister, built in the 15th century, is the peaceful heart of the monastic complex.

    • The Refectory houses Ghirlandaio’s Last Supper, painted in 1476, along with frescoes by Benedetto Veli.

    • The Kitchen still preserves a large stone fireplace and a 17th-century table, evoking the monks’ daily life.

    • The Church of San Biagio, just outside the walls, dates back to 1080 and features frescoes attributed to Filippo di Antonio Filippelli.
